Institute of Slavic Studies commemorates the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

On 27.02. 2025, an event was held at the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences to commemorate the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and to summarise a grant implemented by Dr Orest Semotiuk at the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences entitled ‘Laughter during war: Russian aggression in Ukraine in political cartoons and memes’ (NCN Polonez Bis 2023-2025).

Dr. Semotiuk presents his research on the 3rd anniversary of Russian full-scale aggression of Ukraine

On the 3rd anniversary of Russian full-scale aggression of Ukraine Dr. Orest Semotiuk participated in two online conferences. The first conference Ukraine: towards the West. Culture, Values and Language was organized by the Faculty of Philosophy at Adam Mickiewicz University in Poznań. Dr.Semotiuk’s presentation Ukrainian Refugees in International and National Political Cartoons and Memes on Russian Full-scale Aggression: Quantitative and Qualitative Analysis was a part of the panel Images of War.

21-24. November 2024 Dr. Orest Semotiuk participated in the 56th Annual Convention of the Association for Slavic, East European, and Eurasian Studies (ASEEES). His presentation “Ideology vs. Quasi-Ideology: Ruscism and “Ukrofascism” in World, Ukrainian, and Russian Political Cartoons and Memes” was a part of the panel “Make Laughter, Not War: Caricature, Emotion, and Politics in the Post-soviet Era”.

10-11. October 2024 Dr. Semotiuk participated in the Symposium “Visual Rhetorics of Humor: Using and Forming an Iconography of Stereotypes”. The symposium was organized by Kondas Centre of Naive and Outsider Art (Viljandi) and Estonian Literary Museum (Tartu).

Dr. Semotiuk presented his paper “Impartiality vs. Partiality: Political Cartoons on Russian-Ukrainian War (international and national context)
