Institute of Slavic Studies commemorates the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine

On 27.02. 2025, an event was held at the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences to commemorate the third anniversary of Russia’s invasion of Ukraine and to summarise a grant implemented by Dr Orest Semotiuk at the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences entitled ‘Laughter during war: Russian aggression in Ukraine in political cartoons and memes’ (NCN Polonez Bis 2023-2025).

At the beginning of the meeting, which was held in a hybrid format, the Director of the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Dr Ewa Golachowska, Professor IS PAN, welcomed the guests. This was followed by the Chair of the Scientific Council of the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences, Prof. Anna Zielińska, who spoke about key initiatives and cooperation with Ukrainian scientists and scholars since the outbreak of the full-scale war between Russia and Ukraine. As part of this cooperation, Dr Orest Semotiuk came to the Institute of Slavic Studies of the Polish Academy of Sciences.

After a lecture summarizing the implementation of the grant, Dr Semotiuk took the guests on a tour of the exhibition entitled ‘To defeat the enemy with laughter: political cartoons and memes in the Russian-Ukrainian war’. The exhibition featured works by cartoonists from 65 countries from Europe, Asia, the Americas, Africa and Australia.
